Personals in my area - franklinkelsey5 - 10-16-2025 Hello, Guest! Article about personals in my area: What a great resources. Looking for an in person Instructor in my area (Eastern WV) Hello and Thanks to the site managers. What a great resources. Click here for Personals in my area I just started my journey with learning to play an Irish Banjo. I found a person local who I will be meeting up with in the next couple weeks that Plays Fiddle and Banjo, but is not an instructor, but has agreed to meet up and just provide me some pointers and insight ( Which I greatly appreciate ). I reached out to the local music shop, but they only offer Bluegrass 5 String. I have found a couple jam sessions ( Which I am by no means ready to participate in yet ) that are about a 90 minute drive away, but have not really found anything to local to my area thru google/Facebook community etc searches. Wondered if anyone might have a lead to an instructor within a reasonable distance of Shepherdstown WV who might take on a old man trying to learn a new trick - AKA learn to play Irish Banjo. Thanks again for a great site and taking the time. Have a great weekend. Re: Looking for an in person Instructor in my area (Eastern WV) You may have already tried this, but if you go into your profile (link in the upper left corner of the page), underneath your map are links to nearby members and nearby sessions. At the very least, you could look through the nearby members, and if any of them have profile details that look interesting, you could reach out and try messaging them privately (by clicking on their username, which takes you to their profile, and there’s a Send A Message button in the upper right corner of the page). You might not directly find a teacher, but it could help you meet more folks that play Irish traditional music in your area, and they might be able to help you find an in-person banjo teacher. You could also try going to some of the nearby sessions just to listen and observe. Introduce yourself as a beginner player, and they might be able to help you find a teacher as well! And at the very least, you’ll get to meet more folks that share your interests! There are all sorts of online resources available as well. Enda Scahill does some nice YouTube videos about playing tenor banjo, and he has a nice tutoring book available. And there are a good number of instructors that will do live Zoom lessons with you (myself included). And there’s the OAIM (Online Academy of Irish Music), which might be a useful resource: https://www.oaim.ie. Best of luck, and I hope you find your journey into playing banjo as fulfilling as I have! Re: Looking for an in person Instructor in my area (Eastern WV) Are you in the ‘United States of America’? I thought WV was Wolverhampton at first. Good luck with one’s quest! Re: Looking for an in person Instructor in my area (Eastern WV) Hello, WH Barz! AB Steen here. Thanks for posting from West Virginia and learning banjo. I cannot help you with sessions near you except to say reach out to all 9 or 10 of the West Virginia members here. I play flute though I appreciate tenor banjo players in Irish music & a few clawhammer types. Something like this… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsB0lHfUxKE ~ Gerry O’Connor teaching right hand. & this, too ~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLX5PRfVa2s ~ The Morris Brothers - “Hog Eyed Man” Welcome to the session dot org! Re: Looking for an in person Instructor in my area (Eastern WV) Banjo covers a lot of ground. Are you going to be playing tenor banjo in GDAE? If so, probably not many players in that style near you. However! There should be a fair few mandolin players around. That too is a 4-string instrument tuned GDAE and played with a flatpick. Should be possible to pick up some useful information from some of them. Re: Looking for an in person Instructor in my area (Eastern WV) Research the UPPEE POTOMAC MUSIC RETREAT series of weekends in Shepherdstown. They certainly can help you. https://www.upperpotomacmusic.info/ Re: Looking for an in person Instructor in my area (Eastern WV) I’m a fiddler in Frederick Md, but don’t know of and teachers in the area, however in the Baltimore and DC area there are several. You might want to check out this event https://facebook.com/events/s/cce-oneill-malcoms-irish-folk-/865067322268301/ Or this one. https://facebook.com/events/s/the-third-annual-baltimore-iri/470112448968657/. There’s a session at the Barn of Harpers Ferry every Wednesday, I know there are a couple of mandolin players that attend that one and may know a teacher. Re: Looking for an in person Instructor in my area (Eastern WV) Hello, WHBarz. As the Reverend mentions above, Enda Scahill teaches online and through his books. I began my banjo journey a couple of years ago - just down the road from you in Leesburg, VA - with Enda’s terrific books and joined his online study group a year later. Enda is a wonder - and his teaching skills match his banjo wizardry. He has figured out the digital thing and works it remarkably effectively. But you are looking for in person, which I understand. I work with a local mandolin teacher and that experience is invaluable for me. Though I can’t point you to a banjo teacher in our area, I’d be happy to meet up and provide picking encouragement. Meantime I strongly suggest you start with Enda’s books which will set you solidly on the picking straight and narrow and keep you there! Helen Aikman. Thanks all. Appreciate the feedback and ideas. I am signed up for Enda’s Patreon lessons and that has been helpful. I will keep trying to find someone local in the meantime. Re: Looking for an in person Instructor in my area (Eastern WV) Richard Osban might be able to help, he’s a member here and a teacher. He also runs the Baltimore Irish Tenor Banjo Summit that I mentioned earlier. I understand there will be classes for all levels. https://thesession.org/members/search?q=Richard+Osban.
