Chicago’s own entertainment triple threat Steve Harvey has joined the folks behind Match.com to launch a new marriage-minded dating site. “Women want to date with the goal that it turns into a relationship,” Harvey told me Wednesday. “It kind of breaks my heart when I have women on my show who’ve been on 50, 100 dates. Something’s not right if you have to go out with 100 people.” Delightful, which goes live today, is aimed at helping singles “find love and keep love,” said Harvey, who will host video chats, write blog posts and participate in question-and-answer sessions on the site. “We’re going to help women get themselves out of the hunting game,” he says. “And we’re going to make a concerted effort to get men on here who are looking more seriously for a relationship instead of just dating a lot of people.” Harvey, whose best-selling book, “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man: What Men Really Think About Love, Relationships, Intimacy, and Commitment” (Amistad), was made into a 2012 film, “Think Like a Man” and its 2014 sequel, “Think Like a Man Too,” acts as something of a love coach on his syndicated radio show, “The Steve Harvey Morning Show” and his daily talk show on NBC, “Steve Harvey.” “There really isn’t an online dating brand that’s driven by a known relationship expert who has mass appeal,” Sam Yagan, CEO of the Match Group, said Wednesday. “Steve helps people all the time find relationships. To take his power and his outlook on relationships and his views on love and combine that with the technology and algorithms that we know to work creates a powerful new category.” Still, Delightful joins a crowded field, including eHarmony, whose stated mission is fostering long-term relationships. What, I asked Yagan, really sets it apart from its dating site peers? “If you think about Tinder and Match and OkCupid, a huge part of dating products is the audience they attract,” he said. “It’s like choosing which bar to go to, different bars all sell the same alcohol at the end of the day.” So if Tinder is the bar where people go to hook up, Delightful is the bar where people go to settle down. “The L word has really been the third rail in the world of online dating,” Yagan said. “There’s a belief that there’s a segment for whom that word is very scary and intimidating, so a lot of brands don’t embrace it.
